Encouraging a Love for Reading Through Self-Directed Choices

Independent reading is an essential part of literacy development, but it’s just as important to provide students with opportunities for self-directed reading — where they have the freedom to choose materials that spark their curiosity.

Whether it’s books related to classroom topics, maps, comics, or even song lyrics, choice fosters a love for reading and encourages students to see it as an enjoyable and meaningful activity.

Watch this video to explore strategies for making self-directed reading accessible to all students. Christy highlights ideas for removing barriers for students with complex support needs to ensure they, too, can engage in wide reading.

The video is an excerpt from a Bridges Professional Development workshop.  While we can’t share the whole workshop -- with all the real-life classroom examples, activities, tips, tricks and extra resources — this video gives you a sneak peek.
