Workshops
Environmental Communication Teaching (ECT)
The focus of Environmental Communication Teaching (ECT) training is functional communication in natural environments. For this series of training we are focusing on the use of AAC strategies and tools in the school environment. The full ECT training is a 5 day intensive, school year process. The training dates occur across the school year. Participants are expected to attend as teams that choose two students to apply the ECT strategies with during school activities between the trainings. The research findings recommend that the primary team consist of an AAC user's teacher, SLP and teaching assistant. All other staff for the chosen students are welcome including family members.
ECT training has two goals. The first, and primary goal, is to facilitate an increase of augmentative communication use in target students. The secondary goal is to give communication facilitating adults (teachers, SLPs, parents, para-educators, and others) strategies for promoting initiation of communication through systematic planning of activities and arranging the environment. The training has a long-time research base dating back to 1992. The original project was directed by George Karlan, Ph.D. The presenter, Kelly Fonner, is a Karlan trained ECT trainer. Participants attending this training series will learn the basics of ECT strategies which provide (1) a systematic approach to activity planning, (2) a structure for developing effective partner responses, and (3) a framework for communication- focused environmental arrangements.
Workshop Objectives:
As a result of attending this series of workshops, participants will be able to:
-
Identify solutions to common classroom communication problems
-
Select communication rich activities and infuse them with meaningful, communicative functions
-
Develop partner prompts that promote independence in communication
-
Develop sets of activity-based scripts to support a communication routine
-
Learn strategies that can become a part of your service delivery to students who struggle with communication
